Great
reviews - and am so glad to see Paul Copley using his Yorkshire roots. And I had
to smile at what the Times review said - about a small town looking to Bradford
or Leeds as its big city. That perfectly describes where I live - in a village
(more the size of a town with a population of 15000) which is very much part of
the Bradford Metropolitan area.
From
a proud Yorkshirewoman,

They call Paul “an exceptional actor....” Well, DUH!!! Where have they been???
Seriously, these raves are great news for one of our most beloved HH boys.

Wow! Those ARE great reviews. Paul
C. is such a lovely person and appealing screen presence—it’s easy to root
for him and his success. He’s been awfully good to the Hornblower fans.

I became aware of Paul Copley's talents when I watched the
first Hornblower mini-series in 1999. He seemed so confident and relaxed
in the day-to-day operations on board the ship. I was so impressed with
the ease in which he handled his chores as a seaman.
But, I honestly think it was the combination of two factors
that led me to become a REAL fan. His natural, masculine talent comes
through (loud and clear) when observing his friendship with Styles and his
almost paternal dealings with Horatio. These traits continued in the
second Hornblower series and, I'm quite sure, will also be present in Hornblower
3.
I've never met Mr. Copley, but he gives me (as a fan), the
impression that he is a friendly and kind person who thoroughly enjoys being an
actor. I wish him all the luck in the world for the future and can hardly
wait to see "Matthews" back in action again. BRAVO - Paul
Copley. You're a delight.
Most sincerely,
Susan Nieradko

If I had to pick someone to have by my side in a
crisis it would probably be Matthews, as portrayed by Paul Copley. He's used to
life at the sharp end, has studied in the school of tough knocks, but is still
basically fair, decent and honest. Good bloke! I loved the character he played
in 'The Lakes' too; my heart went out to him then.
Cheers,
Janet

THE CONSUMMATE SAILOR THAT IS MATHEWS:
Horatio's handling of young Mr. Hammond was expert...Whereas Mathews was
bordering on defiance (not that I minded). Horatio treated JH with respect even
when it was more than apparent that he was a coward and was certainly not going
to make it in the navy no matter where he served. And here is the time for me to
give a big shout out to good old Matty. I loved his character and these new
movies didn't disappoint. The look of pride on his face when Captain Hornblower
came aboard was wonderful. I am sure that those feelings also factored into
Mathew's treatment of JH as well. He was right when saying Horatio had given
many men a chance, he gave Mathews a chance and Mathews has ever since given and
received respect. I think it is unthinkable to him that someone, especially one
of Hornblower's officers, would disobey orders to the peril of their beloved
captain.

Mr. Copley is a terrific actor! He has also been so very
kind to us HH-fans. I am truly appreciative of the photo I got at last year's
(HH2002) convention. Mr. Copley really went above and beyond the call of duty.
For that, I salute him.
Ciao!
